Our Story

Since transitioning to a Community Supported Leisure Centre, we've put in a lot of effort to rebuild and improve the Centre. Below, you'll find a timeline of key events that have shaped Camelford Leisure Centre into what it is today. Your support has been crucial in helping us continue.

COUNCIL CLOSURE

2010
Cornwall Council propose closing Camelford Leisure Centre for financial reasons (£180,000 annual deficit)

Cornwall Council decided to give the Community 12 weeks to develop a business plan for taking the Centre into community management. A lifeline of £50,000 was awarded by the Council.

Closure postponed to April 2012.

FUNDING

2012-2013
Funding was awarded to raising the pool depth to 1.5m to allow swimmers to swim unsupervised. Also towards the biomass heating system which would greatly reduce heating costs.

Recruitment and training of potential Directors. Local Business Support group tasked to assist in the transition to new management.

Forest Fuels selected to run tendering process for a new biomass boiler and project manage it's installation.

COMMUNITIY TAKEOVER

2nd January 2013
2nd Janury 2013: Camelford Leisure Centre opens under Community Management.

Biomass Boiler installation is completed - no more oil! New signage and branding installed.

CENTRE GROWTH

2014-2020
Introduction of Gold Memberships.

Fitness Classes - Circuits and Core began.

2 years after the Community takeover, the Centre is almost breaking even.

Creation of our Community Hub or Social Area (from the men's dryside changing room) using a £10,000 grant from SITA Community Fund.

Fitness Suite was refurbished.

2017 - £10,000 overhaul of plant room machinery, funded by Big Lottery Fund grant

2018 - Stairs into the pool, funded by the over £2000 raised by the aqua ladies and wider community.

LOCKDOWN

2020
Major pool maintenance, filters cleaned and serviced ensuring the logevity of the pool, costing £13,500.

Global pandemic occurs, forcing all leisure facilities to close. Approximately 40% of our wonderful members decided to keep their memberships.

The 33KW array of solar panels (worth £30,000) were installed by Naked Solar.

Clubright software and booking system installed. 

2021 - £30,000 worth of work completed on the Sports Hall roof to prevent leaks.

2022 - Sports hall floor resurfaced. Investment into the pool plant room, with new dosing unit and pool pumps to improve water flow throughout the Centre.
